Idle Free Surrey!

Idle Free Surrey
British Columbia is concerned with vehicle idling.  In 2004, Metro Vancouver developed a model municipal anti-idling bylaw for member municipalities to adopt at their own discretion.  Car idling in Surrey for more than three minutes in a one-hour period can lead to being find $50.  Many other municipalities are working to educate their citizens that idling is not worth it.  There is a movement growing to build an Idle Free BC.  But it starts with you!

The Issue

Vehicle idling is a common but unnecesary occurence that has negative impacts on both the environment and our health.  Idling vehicle engines contributes to air pollution due to the emissions from vehicle exhaust.   Youth are particularly vulnerable to air pollution since they breathe faster than adults and inhale more air per kilogram of body weight.  Smog levels from vehicle exhaust tend to be worse in the late afternoon with an increase of traffic as the school day finishes and pick-ups begin.

Help to educate your school community about the issues of idling and spread the message that going green means turning the key.
